The Residence Program provides a time and place for artists to experience new encounters and carry out experiments to guide their their future projects. Participating artists are expected to bring new ideas to the local culture and people while they, in turn, will hopefully acquire new perspectives through these fresh encounters. As a result of the residence program, the artists will convey their new experiences, gathered from the local lifestyle and our particular geographic situation, to their next destination. We hope that the residence program at Akiyoshidai International Art Village becomes a space for artists to go beyond cultural borders and expand their outlooks, exchange their unique understandings and establish relationships with fellow artists. <<1>> Residency period 22 January - 12 March, 2013 [50days] <<2>>Number of artists accepted (1) 4 artists of any nationalities, working in any field, who are under 40 years old. (2) Groups of 2 artists may apply, but no larger. <<3>> Eligible applicants Artists who are able (1) to stay at AIAV for the designated period of time. (2) to participate in all public programs, e.g. open studio, presentations and gallery talks, and produce the results from his or her residence activities. (3) to communicate with local people and participate in the exchange program, e.g. via talks, lectures, workshops and presentations, in English or Japanese. (4) to provide materials, e.g. pictures and videos, for publicity and archiving in accordance with AIAV’s requirement. (5) to take part in education programs at local schools and universities. (6) to work and live independently. (7) to present results in English or other languages, e.g. exhibitions, blogs or talks, outside Japan within a year after the program finishes. *Artists cannot be accompanied by anyone, including family and collaborator(s). When aritsts’ family or friends visit AIAV, they will be charged an accommodation fee of approximately 3,000 yen per night (price differes according to room type). <<4>> Support (1) Travel expenses: round trip from your address to AIAV (international flight tickets should be return: single tickets cannot be accepted) (2) Accommodation at AIAV (single room with own bath and toilet)*1 (3) Studio (the allocation of studios is decided by AIAV: artists may have to share with others) (4) Production expenses of 200,000 yen (5) Per diem of 2,800 yen × day *1 There is a common kitchen at the residence hall, where artists can cook for themselves. NB Income tax (20%) will be imposed on those from countries, which do not have a tax convention with Japan. <<5>> Copyright and Publicity (1) Artworks produced during the program belong to the artists. (2) Images, taken during the program, e.g. photos of the aritsts and exhibition view, belong to AIAV. (3) Artists are expected to be supportive when photographed and asked to participate in publicity, e.g. for newspaper interview. Tweet ]]> http://www.aiav.jp/blog/2012/03/post_109.php http://www.aiav.jp/blog/2012/03/post_109.php trans_2011-2012 Mon, 19 Mar 2012 15:28:15 +0900 展示最終日となりました。 It was the last day of the exhibition. 最後の最後で、何名かの来場者の方々が展示を見に来てくださいました。 Some people visited the exhibition for the last minutes and enjoyed seeing it. 展示閉会後、アーティスト達は、スムースに作品の撤収作業をし、シッピングのための梱包をしていかれました。 After the exhibition closing, all the artists deinstalled their work smoothly and prepared packing for shipping. 夕食へ行く準備ができた頃には、みなさん疲れ、空腹でした。 When we got ready to go for a dinner, all of us were tired and hungry... 夜も更けたころに、ついに最後のみんなそろっての夕食のために山口市内へ行きました。 In the late night, we finally went down to Yamaguchi to have the last dinner together. 笑いと笑顔のたくさんある夕食でした。。。皆さん疲れていましたが。。。そして、眠たそうでした。。。グ〜グ〜グ〜。。。 It was a fun dinner with lots of laughs and smiles… though most of us were pretty tired… and looked sleepy… zzz… 皆さん夕食を楽しんで、良い夢を見られたことを願います！ Hope everyone enjoyed the dinner and had a nice dream... http://www.aiav.jp/blog/2012/03/post_107.php http://www.aiav.jp/blog/2012/03/post_107.php trans_2011-2012 Mon, 19 Mar 2012 14:35:08 +0900 このミーティングは、鹿野町の皆さん、山口県立大学の斉藤教授の学生さん、山口県デザイン・センターのコーディネーターの方々によるご好意を通して実現しました。 This meeting took place by the generosity from people from Kano-cho, students from Prof. Saito’s class at Yamaguchi Prefectural University and coordinators from Yamaguchi design center. 鹿野町には、『おみくじ』や『女性運動』についてのおもしろい歴史があります。 Kano-cho has an interesting history about a fortune slip (a written oracle) and Woman’s right movements. 地元の神社の宮司さん、宮本さんからお話をお聞きしました。宮本さんのおじいさんが女性運動の普及に関わられ、その活動資金を「おみくじ」により補うというおみくじ生産の先駆者であったと言うことをお話しくださいました。 We listened to Mr. Miyamoto, a local Shinto priest. He talked about his grandfather who worked on woman’s social rights movements and the funding by selling fortune slips as the pioneer in the fortune slip production. 鹿野町では、日本国内のおみくじ生産の６０〜７０％を担っていると言うことです。女性運動は、おみくじの売り上げにより経済的に支えられ、鹿野町の女性もその生産に社会の一員としてしっかりと関わって来られました。 Kano-cho produces 60 to 70 % of the total production of fortune slips in Japan. The woman’s right movements was funded by the sale of the fortune slips and the women in Kano-cho exclusively got involved in the production as a active social member in Kano-cho. お寺にもお伺いさせて頂き、お庭の作りで評価を得られている重森三玲さんによる枯山水のお庭を拝見させて頂きました。 We also visited a Buddhist temple and saw a dry garden by Mr. Mirei Shigemori, who has a respectful reputation in the orientation and design of the garden. これらの場所を見回った後に、地元の食材を使って用意された昼食をいただきました。とてもすばらしいおもてなしでした。 After visiting those places, we were invited to a lunch prepared with local vegetables and ingredients. It was an amazing treat for us. その後、鹿野町への訪問者数の増加、地域のつながりを深めるため、また幸福を呼び込むためと言う目標で、『おみくじ』に関する新しいアイデアを考えるためのワークショップに参加しました。３つのグループを作り、アイデアを出し合い、プレゼンテーションを行いました。 Then, all of us participated in a workshop to come up unique ideas for fortune telling goods in order to think about potential to increase visits, to network community and to bring more happiness. We made three groups with local participants and discussed ideas and made them into presentations. ワークショップの後は、レヘマさん、アンナさん、津田さんと、餅つきを体験され、その後はつきたてのおいしいお餅をいただきました。 After the workshop, Rehema, Anna and Michiko tried “Mochitsuki” and everyone had fresh tasty mochi at the end. すばらしいイベントへ招待してくださりありがとうございました。鹿野町の皆様、斉藤教授、学生の方々、そしてコーディネーターの方々のご好意、そして、ご親切なおもてなしに感謝致します。 Thank you for inviting us to the wonderful event! Tweet ]]> http://www.aiav.jp/blog/2012/03/post_106.php http://www.aiav.jp/blog/2012/03/post_106.php trans_2011-2012 Sun, 18 Mar 2012 14:28:18 +0900 アーティスト達は、みなさん、学生達とのカジュアルなミーティングをしました。 All the artists had a casual meeting with the students. 学生達は英語で自己紹介をし、アーティスト達に英語で質問をしました。 The students introduced themselves in English and gave questions to the artists in English. 質問は、作品、日本での文化体験、日本での好きな物、アーティストの生活や自分たちの国での文化的視点などでした。 Those questions were about the works, cultural experience in Japan, their favorites in Japan, artists’ life and cultural perspectives in their home country and etc. 学生達にとっては、自分が言いたいことを英語で表現することが少し難しかったようです。しかしながら、みなさん英語でなんとか意思疎通が出来ていました。 For the students, it looked a little bit challenging to express what they wanted to say in English. However, all the students managed to communicate in English!!! 明らかに、学生にもアーティストにも良い体験になりました。 Obviously it was a good experience for both the students and the artists. このミーティングの間、笑顔や笑いが多く見られました。 Lots of smiles and laughs were seen in the session. 今日は訪問してくださいまして、ありがとうございました。今回の体験が良い思い出となることを願っています。 Thank you for visiting us today and hope this became a good memory for you! 夕方には、ねねさんによる広島風のお好み焼きをいただきました。 滞在アーティスト、そして芸術村のスタッフにも寛大にスペシャルお好み焼きを作ってくださいました。 In the evening, we had Hiroshima-style Okonomiyaki prepared by Ms. Nene. She generously served pieces of her special Okonomiyaki for the artists and AIAV’s staff. 材料を注意深く選び、ねねさんの好きなソースを使い、お好み焼きを用意してくださいました。とてもおいしいお好み焼きで、つくっている過程自体がパフォーマンスでした（特にお好み焼きをホット・プレートの上でひっくり返すときが見応えがありました）。 She carefully selected the ingredients and used her favorite sauce for it. It was very delicious and the whole process was almost like a performance, especially when she flipped the Okonomiyaki on a hot plate! おいしいお好み焼きをありがとうございました。あのおいしい味にとても印象づけられました。ネネさんの心持ちや気配りに感謝致します!!! Yamayaki finally took place!!! みんなで早起きをして、山焼きに参加するために集合場所へ向かいました。 We woke up early and got down to a meeting point to join Yamayaki. 吉村さんが親切に歓迎してくださり、山焼きのために同行してくださりました。また、山焼きの目的や歴史について説明してくださいました。 Mr. Yoshimura generously welcomed us and accompanied us for Yamayaki and gave us some explanations about the purpose and history of Yamayaki. 今回は、朝に降った雪の湿気や風向きの為に、焼け具合はゆっくりでした。 At this time, the burning was slow because of moist by snow in the morning and direction of wind blows. 焼け具合はゆっくりでしたが、たびたび燃え上がる音と大きな炎を見る機会がありました。 The burning was slow but we occasionally had chances to see big fire with burning sounds!!! とても劇的なイベントであり、また地域に根付いたイベントでした。 It was very dramatic events and community events! 山焼きの裏側にある悲しいお話は、地域社会の現実でした。高齢化や若い世代の減少で、伝統を続けていくことが難しくなっていることでした。 Sad story behind it was the reality about local community. It is becoming more difficult to keep tradition alive, mainly because of aging and depopulation of younger generation. 吉村さんはこの話を国際的な文脈でもお話しくださいました。ヨーロッパなどを含め、多くの国々がこのような難しい現状に直面していると言うことでした。 Mr. Yoshimura also told us about it in international context. They deserve it!!! http://www.aiav.jp/blog/2012/03/post_100.php http://www.aiav.jp/blog/2012/03/post_100.php trans_2011-2012 Sat, 10 Mar 2012 09:09:09 +0900 午前中は、芸術村のスタッフは、展示の最終準備やアーティスト・トークのために、テーブルやイスを用意し、会場作りをしました。 In the morning, AIAV’s staff spent sometime to set up last small items for exhibition and tables and chairs for artist’s talk. ゲスト・スピーカーの米田さんや、審査員であり今回のアーティスト・トークの進行役である田中教授は、レジデンス・プログラム・コーディネーター/キュレーターの塚田さんとレジデンス・プログラムや展示に関して会話をされていたようでした。 Ms. Yoneda, a guest speaker, and Prof. Tanaka, one of the juries and the moderator for the artist’s talk, had conversation about the residence program and the exhibition with Junko, the residence program curator/coordinator. レジデンス・アーティスト、米田さん、田中教授も同様に簡単なおしゃべりをする時間があったようです。 The artists, Ms. Yoneda and Prof. Tanaka had a little bit of chat in the morning, as well. アーティスト・トークが近づくにつれて、芸術村を来館くださる人の数も増えてきました。 Towards the artist’s talk, people came up to AIAV. アーティスト・トークの前に展示を見ることが出来た人もいたようですし、アーティスト・トークを先に聞いてから展示を見る機会があった方々もいたようです。 Some people spent time viewing the exhibition before the talk and some other took seats to listen to the artist talk before viewing. 田中教授がトークを進行してくださり、作品やその作品の作られた文脈などを作品理解の入り口として質問をされました。 Prof. Tanaka moderated the talk and gave the artists some questions relating their work and the context as an entry point. 米田さんも作品の裏側にある具体的なアイデアを聞くべくいくつか質問をして下さいました。 Ms. Yoneda asked them to get into bit more specific ideas behind their work. レヘマさんは、タンザニアの文化や文化的な工芸品の意味、またレヘマさんのひいおばあさんについての個人的な物語に触れながら、彼女のプロジェクトについて話しました。 Rehema talked about her project in relation to Tanzanian culture and significance of their artifact and a personal story about her great grand mother. アンナさんは、骨董市で見つけた写真に投影した個人的な解釈であったり、テキストを利用した一人称の表現をそれらの写真に込め、その被写体の個人的な記憶、またはアンナさん自身の解釈を浮かびだそうという試みについて語りました。 Anna talked about her own interpretations projected on the found images from flea market or her attempts bringing up personal memories or her own interpretations out of the found images in first person's expression by employing her own texts. 米田さんも写真家であると言うこともあり、アンナさんも米田さんも、これらの見つけられた写真や物語に対する取り組み方や視線には共感する部分があると言うことでした。 Since Ms. Yoneda is also a photographer, Anna and she had something common in their approaches and perspectives on found images and narratives. 津田さんは鏡や双子に関して、また、実際に鏡をインスタレーションの中で使った体験を話されました。また、静止画を展示の一部として初めて利用したことも語られました。 Michiko talked about mirrors and twins, as well as her installation employing the actual mirror. She also mentioned her first-time attempt using still images as a part of her exhibition. おもしろい発見は、それぞれのアーティストがそれぞれのアーティストに何らかの影響を与えていたことであったり、アーティストが普段は使わない方法を試したと言うことであったりと言うことでした。 Interesting discovery was that each artist somehow influenced each other and tried new method that they usually don’t use in their projects. これは、レジデンス・プログラムのおもしろく独特な結果のようでした。アーティスト達はお互いのことを知る時間があったので、意図的にではないにしろ、影響をしあい、結果としてそれぞれの作品がその影響を反映していたようでもありました。 It seemed that this was an interesting and unique consequence out of the residence program. Since the artist spent decent amount of time to get to know each other, it seemed they unintentionally influence each other and consequently their work sometimes reflect this influence. トークは、都市と地方というロケーションの違いに焦点があたり、他のレジデンス・プログラムについても触れました。両方とも、アーティスト、団体、地域に対しての長所や短所があるようです。また、充実した滞在や体験を得るためには、アーティストのタイプや目的（リサーチ主体なのか、制作主体なのかなど）にも因るようです。。 The talk also referred to other residence programs with a focus on locations, like city vs country side. Both have advantages and disadvantages for the artists, organizations and the community. Also it sounded like it depends on type and purpose of artists, like a research-based or an individual studio work based, in order to make fulfilling stay and experiences. トークは、来館してくださった方々との質疑応答で終えました。その中の１つは、創作に関する原動力は何かと言う物でした。滞在アーティスト、そして米田さんは、自身の視線をお話しされ、その解答は何らかの形で、それぞれのアーティストが社会や生活に対する個人的な視線や取り組みに関わる物でした。 The talk ended with some Q & A session with the audiences. One of the questions was about the source of energy or inspiration for creation. The artists and Ms. Yoneda gave their own perspectives and their answers somehow touched with their views and perspectives on society and life. トークの後には、展示を見られる方々、アーティストと会話をする方々とありました。 After the talk, some people spent time viewing the exhibition and other spent some time talking to the artists. トークの後は、カジュアルな軽食が用意され、アーティストや来館された方々が、それぞれに会話をする機会がありました。 The talk was followed by casual dinner and the attendees enjoyed frank conversation with each other. この晩は、サポートしてくださっている来館者の方から差し入れで、おいしい地元のお酒を楽しむことが出来、アーティスト同士またゲスト・スピーカーを交えたリラックスした会話を楽しむことが出来ました。 The evening ended with a tasty local drink, which was gifted to the artist from one of the supportive guest visitors, and the artists had fun and relaxing conversation among the artists and the guest speakers! 展示会への来場、またご支援ありがとうございました。 Thank you for visiting us for the exhibition and thank you for all your support!!! 展示会は、３月１８日まで続きます。ぜひ、展示を見に来てください！ The exhibition will be up until March 18th, 2012. When they entered to the room, all students brought chairs and formed rows and smoothly sat. みんな行儀よく、アンナさんのプレゼンテーションを注意深く聞いてくれました。 They are all well disciplined and carefully listened to Anna’s presentation. 質問をしてくださいと問われた時、みんなで小さなグループとなり議論をしました。その議論の際は、とても騒がしくなりましたが、質問をするようにとあてられると、他の生徒達は静かにし、その生徒がはっきりと話せるようにしてくれました。 When they were asked to give her questions, they discussed with each other as small groups. They are quite loud during discussion but when they are appointed to give questions, all other students stayed quiet for him or her to talk clearly. 生徒達はとても規律正しい生徒達でした。 They were very disciplined!!! プレゼンテーションの後には、宮園先生が生徒、教育、美術の役割などを語ってくださいました。 After the presentation, Mr. Miyazono talked about the students, education, role of visual arts and so on. 招待してくださいましてありがとうございました。 Thank you for inviting us! アンナさんも学生からすばらしいエネルギーを得ることが出来ました！ Anna received great energy from students!!! 山口大学付属中学校を後にして、山口現代藝術研究所の現在の展示や瑠璃光寺の五重塔を見るために立ち寄りました。 Leaving Yamaguchi Jr.High School, we made a quick stop at YICA to see the current exhibition and a pagoda at Ruri kohji. レヘマさんと津田さんも山口市を訪れました。 Rehema and Michiko also went down to Yamaguchi city. レヘマさんは印刷会社に問い合わせや注文のチェックをするために、津田さんはプロジェクトのための木製の構造を作る準備のためにホーム・センターを訪れました。 Rehema checked with printing company and Michiko visited hardware store to prepare wooden structure for her project. 少し寒かったですが、初春の到来を思わせる太陽の輝くすばらしい一日でした。 It was a nice sunny day, though it was still bit cold, that made us become aware of the arrival of early Spring! The dancers practiced their performance according to choreography and sounds. It seemed that the performance was a kind of new and alternative style with traditional aesthetics in it.
