Profile

Ushio Shinohara

Born in 1932 in Tokyo, he studied at Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Painting. He formed “Neo Dadaism Organizers” with Masunobu Yoshimura, Genpei Akasegawa and Shusaku Arakawa in 1960 to challenge the general idea of art, and explore “Anti-Art” and the new field of expression. He moved to United States with support from The Rockefeller Foundation in 1969, and keeps attention of the world by his shockingly pop and powerful works, including the richly-colored “Oiran” paintings and “motorbike sculpture” made of cardboard. His works are in the collections of museums home and abroad and exhibited in solo and group shows. In the neighborhood of AIAV, Kitakyushu Municipal Museum of Art has his motorbike sculpture and his work ‘A Rabbit and a Frog onto Centaur Iron Motorcycle’ is installed in Kourodai-park in Higashi-ku Yahata, Kitakyushu city.
