NEO-TOPIA

"NEO-TOPIA" exploration of untouched space / creation prompted by transformation

Akiyoshidai International Art Village (AIAV) is located at the foot of Akiyoshidai National Park, the largest karst plateau in Japan. Infinite possibilities are laid in the surroundings of AIAV and artists will go outside the galleries, explore the environment, transform the ordinaries to something else and produce new/neo space/(u)topia.

artists: Novaia Liustra, NAMAIKI, Tetsuro Kano and Yusuke Asai.

Profile

Novaia Liustra
Novaia Liustra means “New Chandelier” in Russian. Formed in 2002, the pair, consisting of artist Yoshihisa Nakano and musicologist Masayuki Yasuhara, current and former lecturers of Yamaguchi University, attempts to cross the border between art and music.

NAMAIKI
David Duval-Smith, graphic designer from New Zealand, and Michael Frank, architect from England, started a collaboration in 1997. The unit, based at “SUPER DELUXE” in Azabu-Juban, Tokyo, works for various unique, creative and playful activities from graphic, hard gospel music, carpentry, to gardening.

Tetsuro Kano
Lives and works in Tokyo. Tetsuro Kano began his career with "Weeds", an installation consisting of the scattered seeds in the exhibition space, with which both artist and audience observe them growing. In his recent projects, a bird has been invited as a part of installations in order to help designing a space. "Studying about something" is a photographic series, capturing something special (to be).

Yusuke Asai
Lives and works in Tokyo. Sometimes spreading the masking tapes, on which he draws unnamed plants with a pen and other times using different clays, dug from the earth, as a paint, Yusuke Asai has been pursuing a unique drawing/painting style inside/outside the gallery and actively participating in both international exhibitions and independent projects.
